On Beliefs and Viewpoint

by mcbutter October 27, 2010

I recently heard National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Wade Davis relate a story of cultural exploration that I was inspired to share. As an anthropologist, he travels the world to live alongside and document indigenous cultures. He made a pointed joke that with Western science, we spend all of our lifetime trying to live to be 100 without losing our teeth, while the Buddhist spends all of their lifetime trying to understand the nature of existence. Here’s an interesting comment on beliefs and viewpoint that the Tibetan monks shared with him:

“We don’t really believe that you went to the moon, but you did. You may not believe that we achieve enlightenment in this lifetime, but we do.” ?

Check out the first 2 minutes of this clip of Abbie Cornish dancing in tights to “My Coo Ca Choo” by Alvin Stardust. I knew I had to share it on the dynoblog. ?

The probability of a woman giving birth to a baby girl instead of a baby boy increases significantly the nearer the mother lives to the equator. While the cause of this gender selection is unknown, scientists believe the constant sunlight hours and abundant food supply in tropical regions may favor female births.

The St. Francis is a historic hotel in Union Square, downtown San Francisco. What a treat to stay there! The tram even stops right in front of the hotel :). In 1939, our favorite child actress, Shirley Temple, stayed there.
